There have been plans in the works for years to make a veteran’s memorial park on a wedge shaped piece of land next to Cedar Creek at the corner of Oak and Main in town but it hadn’t gotten much movement until recently. A few years ago a Cedar Springs native – Tim Brown was killed while serving in Iraq. To honor him and other Cedar Springs residents who are fallen soldiers from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan his family began to seek donations to complete the park. Virtually the entire $35,000.00 needed to build the park was donated and the park and memorial were created. The park was dedicated on July 4th, 2010. The flowers that were donated prior to the dedication were all annuals. As the garden club we thought we could help by donating and planting some perennials. I planted black eyed Susans, light yellow iris, yellow and red daylilies, and some tiger lilies donated from a friend and neighbor Erla Alber. The park is about 10 blocks from our house so my super helper and I loaded up his wagon- stopped at Erla’s for her donation and headed out to plant. It was July when we were doing this and not the best time for transplanting. Expect more posts with more flowers being planted in the spring. For now this is our contribution.
Digging up flowers to donate.
With some help from dad we loaded up the wagon.
There is Erla giving us the tiger lilies.
Okay mom let’s get a move on!
At the park and ready to plant.
Clint and Abbi met us towards the end of planting to pick us up in the van because it was getting dark. We volunteered our big sprinkler as well. We will see how it looks in the spring. Thank you to all who serve. Cedar Springs honors our soldiers.
