Lake Champlain is a beautiful lake and even has it’s own “monster” Champ- a cousin to Loch Ness’s Nessie. We are from Michigan and our lakes are MUCH bigger and deeper but they don’t have a monster so that is fun. The ECHO Science Center is based around the eco-system of the lake and the surrounding area. Lake Champlain is the site of 2 battles of historical significance in US history- both battles were against the Brits -one during the Revolutionary War and one during the War of 1812. There used to be a naval base at this sight and it is now marked by a park and a stuatue- the Lone Sailor. We started there and ate a picnic lunch before heading out for our adventure. The local lake birds would really have liked to share.
Here is a bit more about the history if you are interested.
The Lone Sailor
Rover liked it too.
A bird out perched out in the water.
A view across the lake.
Caelun helped us read the history on the plaque.
The ECHO Science Center from the park.
Rover is ready- let’s head on inside!
First we check out the gift center.
Those are some goofy hats.
Rover likes the “river” at the entrance. I think we are lucky Caelun didn’t think he needed to go swimming.
First station- coloring! Next we go “underwater” in the lake.
Look at all that sunken treasure at the bottom of the lake.
Rover looks at all the giant tanks of fish…
so does Caelun.
Zebra muscles- this is a BIG problem back in the Great Lakes in MI as well. I keep thinking we just need to turn them into a food delicacy- like escargot. Dinner anyone?
Okay so that doesn’t look tasty.
More cool fish.
This one is almost as big a Cae-Cae.
Caelun and daddy look at the fish and then they bring Rover in on the action.
Careful Rover- that is a BIG fish!
Dinner? Maybe the fish is thinking the same thing looking at Caelun and Rover.
This exhibit was in Grand Rapids in the spring but we didn’t get to it so we were pretty happy to see it here in VT.
Clint shows Caelun how to work the controls to make the bugs move.
That is on BIG praying mantis.
Caelun is ready to move on.
Cool- check this out!
More giant bugs- I know I don’t want THAT ant sharing my picnic.
Do you think Rover can take him?
Ever the scientist with the magnifying glass.
Time to move on to the play area.
Uh oh Rover is stuck…
Caelun will help him.
Down the slide and then to pet Champ on the way to the boat.
On to the river tributary system. Water is always fun.
Rover checks it out.
Back to the magnifying glass again.
Anything with buttons to push is great –this was a matching game of lake animals. Rover helped.
There was an entire exhibit of just frogs- we were sure this guy was dead until he moved.
Time to go to the observation deck.
Wonderful view.
Rover agreed. Time to head on to the next thing.
Thanks for coming with us to the ECHO Science Center on Lake Champlain.
