The Grand Rapids Knights of the Round Table holds a oratory competition every spring with 1st prize being a $1500 scholarship, 2nd place is $750, and 3rd place is $250. I brought 3 students- Rachel, Andy, and Alecia. Lew VanderMeer from Grand Rapids Christian brought 1 student. Because there were only 4 students who came to compete the KOTRT offered a $100 savings bond to the speaker coming in 4th. Each speech needed to be 8-10 minutes in length, use only one 3x5 note card, and have a full text copy with sources to turn in. The topic this year was on the complications of ever advancing technology on everyday life. Needless to say they all put in a great deal of work. We were pretty excited when we walked away with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place! That is a total of $2500 in combined scholarship money. Yeah kids!
Rachel, Andy, and Alecia walk in from the parking lot.
We have lunch and chat. Lew VanderMeer is a good friend of mine. He was the minister that married my husband and I.
The kids fill out the forms to compete.
Rachel spoke first.
Then Andy.
Then Alecia.
Finally the student from Grand Rapids Christian HS.
The awards are announced…
Rachel took 1st, Alecia 2nd, and Andy got 3rd, with the young lady from GR Christian getting 4th and a $100 savings bond.
Lew with his student.
Me with my merry band. Way to go gang!
